Minimalist design for ISO 9001:2008

The term minimalist is widely associated with architectural, interior design, garden, music and art. Minimalist is when an element is stripped down to its basic necessity.
I recently moved to a new house and change my concept to a minimalist ID. I love the concept of non clutter, clean line furnitures and keep everything to a minimum. I have thrown and give away all old stuffs and only keep the necessary items. See below pictures of a minimalist concept:

Think of a minimalist design for ISO 9001.

If your company is a small to medium size and you like to practice this concept, think about what are the compulsory procedures required by ISO 9001? Only 6 procedures are required besides the Quality Manual.

• Control of Document
• Control of Records
• Internal Audit
• Control of nonconforming product and process
• Corrective Action and
  
• Preventive action

The concept of "write what you do" is not required here. Many perceived ISO 9001 as documentation nightmare. There is no requirements to have a procedure to control a process or an activity. You only have to prove that you have met the requirements.

Let us look at few examples.
A printing company using Pentone Colour Chart when checking the outcome of printing. This company do not need to write a procedure in checking and inspection of colour. Only a reference to Pentone Chart is needed. However the chart need to be updated and controlled.

Finance procedure is not part of ISO 9001 system, so there is not a requirement to address its function here. Administration is not a requirement as well, however the work environment clauses usually related to Administration function. You have to understand the clauses in the system and plan what is required and what is not. Having a control is good but too much control is not healthy.

It is easier to control and implement minimalist system. After the system is up and running then it is wise to inject some continuous improvement projects. Start adding to your system. Change your design from bare minimalist to something like modern minimalist. Forgive me that I tend relate too much of a management system to interior design system. This is one of those days that I'm glad that I took myself out of clutters. I lived with a lot of unwanted stuff. Same with the system, we need to review and revise but it does not mean that we have to add every time we review our system.
